Nashik (Nasik)

Nashik is slated to be a Tier-I Indian city in the next few years. Although development was slow throughout the 1980s and 1990s, it picked up steam tremendously in the 2000s and that has today made Nashik among the most attractive real estate destinations in India.

In ancient times, Nashik featured prominently in Hindu mythology. The city also had important roles to play during British rule (including acting as a summer retreat). However, only recently has it come to be acknowledged as one corner of the Golden Triangle consisting of Mumbai and Pune, which are two other major economic, educational, and cultural powerhouses of Maharashtra.

Below are some salient features of the city:

A Place of Pilgrimage

Nashik is a fixture on the list of must-visit places for any person seeking spiritual as well religious satisfaction. Two principal deities of Hindu religion, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva, are both prominently associated with Nashik. One of the 12 Jyotirlingas in the country is located just on the outskirts of the city in Trimbakeshwar, which is nestled in the Brahmagiri Mountains. The holy river Godavari also has its origins in this mountain range. Lord Rama, the principal protagonist of the epic Ramayana and also the reincarnation of Lord Vishnu, spent 14 years of his life in the wild that is Panchavati today. Some of the other holy places of worship in and around the city include Vani (Goddes Durga), Kalaram Mandir, Shirdi (Sai Baba), and many others. There is also the small matter of Nashik being home to the Kumbh Mela once every 12 years!

Upcoming Industrial Giant

Nashik is a growing industrial power and nothing manifests this fact better than the Central Government’s plan to anoint the city as a major point of development in the proposed Industrial Corridor Project between Mumbai and Delhi. The city has also received its share of attention from the State Government, which announced the construction of a Golden Quadrangle, which is supposed to be an improvised version of the Golden Triangle. So in addition to the cities of Mumbai, Pune and Nashik, Aurangabad too will join a project where huge industrial-grade infrastructure will be erected between these cities.

At the moment, the MIDC (Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation) has setup industrial zones in four areas in and around the city. They include Gonde, Satpur, Dindori, and Ambad.

A Spate of Connectivity Options

Travelling around most of India is possible from Nashik thanks to the city being equipped with both rail and road connectivity. Work on getting the passenger and cargo terminal operational at Ozhar airport is in full swing and is expected to open for public use pretty soon. This will greatly improve Nashik’s connectivity to all major cities across India.

Building of road infrastructure has been ramped and that is evident from the recent conclusion of two very ambitious and visionary projects in Nashik. First is the construction of the Mumbai-Nashik Expressway, which is a six-lane stretch between the two cities’ exit points. The construction of a similar Expressway has been planned between Nashik and Pune as well. The construction of the city’s second (and one of India’s biggest) flyover was also concluded recently, which is projected to greatly reduce traffic snarls of within the city.

But the biggest boost to Nashik’s connectivity for both passengers and cargo movements is expected to come from the Mumbai-Delhi Railway Corridor project. Upon completion, this would bring the traveling duration between Mumbai and Nashik to less than an hour! Urban development experts predict this project to cause huge population shifts from Mumbai to Nashik, which would help decongest the former.

Excellent Climate, Fabulous Natural Beauty & Future Educational Hub

One of the reasons for Nashik’s growing popularity is its excellent climate. In fact, this has been a hallmark of the city since ancient times. One of the things that help in this is the extremely low pollution level in the city. The other factor that contributes to the city’s fantastic climate is the topography as Nashik sits nestled amid mountains on all sides. The Sahyadri Mountains, which are known for their extensive flora and fauna, are also in the city’s vicinity.

These factors have led to the city being a farmer’s dream. Nashik’s soil is extremely fertile and water is available in plenty throughout the year owing to reservoirs around the city. These factors have played a major role in Nashik being hailed as India’s ‘Wine Capital’. The numbers do justice to this tag too as close to 35% of the country’s wineries are thriving in the city and its outskirts. Nashik also happens to be the largest producer of onions and grapes in India. Lately, floriculture has taken root in a major way among the city’s farmers.

Two very popular and state-run universities in Maharashtra, viz. YCMOU (Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University) and MUHS (Maharashtra University of Health Sciences), call Nashik their home. That apart, the city also hosts many reputed educational institutions across a wide variety of sectors including medicine, engineering, law, hotel management, business management, pharmaceutical and many more.

High Quality Medical Care

A city’s health and growth walk hand in hand!

In keeping with Nashik’s massive growth in the last two decades, a number of well-known healthcare chains have set shop in the city with many more planning their imminent entry. Two prominent examples of the same include Wockhardt and Vasan Eye Care. The city has also seen a large number of specialty doctors setup their respective practices and facilities here, which has only added to the capability of Nashik in dealing with various health issues.
